Normalisation of the recipe database

In our database all ingredients are stored in a normalised form. This means that the nutritional information for each ingredient is always stored in a consistent form, regardless of whether it is a lemon from supermarket A, B or C. Take a look at our example or read more here.

Why is database normalisation important?

Database normalisation ensures the speed of the database and eliminates redundancy. Our recipes are tagged; all ingredients are categorised according to the German Federal Food Code (BLS).

In other words, various information concerning ingredients and the nutritional values of the individual ingredients are stored in such a way that they can be retrieved quickly and in the same way for each recipe.

Database normalisation therefore enables:

  • Generation of shopping lists across several recipes
  • Calculation of daily requirements
  • Linkage of merchandise knowledge
  • Display in an online shop
